Akira Uchida
Contemporary
Based in NYC, Ottawa born Akira Uchida is a dancer, choreographer, creative director, and teacher whose work in dance intersects with film, animation, fashion, and photography. Recently, Akira collaborated with visual artist Tom Furse, creating choreography rendered by AI animation for a music video for HAAi and Jon Hopkins, documented by FACTMag. He also contributed to Puma’s Futrograde show during New York Fashion Week SS23. Akira was recently commissioned to create a film in partnership with the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver, presented by NOWNESS.
Akira has previously presented work at the Capezio Ace Awards, Fire Island Dance Festival, and Battery Dance Festival. He has choreographed for music artists like Leon Vynehall, Photay, and Altrice, and was featured as a dancer with Bad Bunny on SNL and in Ariana Grande’s“ Yes, And?” music video. He has created work for the CLI Conservatory, Joffrey Ballet School, and Flight Path Dance Project, and he has been a guest teaching artist for the Juilliard School.
Beyond his artistic and commercial achievements, Akira regularly teaches in the NYC dance scene through workshop series and pop-up classes. He is dedicated to inspiring the next generation through teaching and advocacy and is currently a faculty member at JUMP Dance Convention and a board member at Share The Movement, a non-profit dedicated to uplifting and providing opportunities to young BIPOC dancers.
